Customer orientated label film solutions

Polinas general manager Bülent Akif Atabay discusses the company’s advances in silicone coated and uncoated BOPP-based transparent liner films and environmentally friendly Poligreen Series biodegredable films.

The importance of the label on the product has undoubtedly been increasing in parallel with the increased knowledge levels of society, in turn accompanied by new levels of customer consciousness. Indeed, the quality of the product has become identical to that of the label on the product. Polinas – which has been providing products for the label industry for many years – first entered the label industry by introducing BOPP based pearlized laminating films into the United States market in 1992 and, over the past quarter of a century, has continued to serve the industry according to market demands, offering a wide product portfolio including reel fed and self adhesive, cut & stack and IML film applications. As a company we began producing pearlized face stock films for self-adhesive labels in 1997 and have added solid white and metallized BOPP based films to our product portfolio over the past ten years.

This year, CPP (cast polypropylene) based face stock films have been produced by Polinas and we plan to present these to the label market in 2008. This series includes transparent, white and no-label look matt films and is appropriate for PE based container and squeezable bottles. A water-based acrylic coated version of BOPP film for better ink adhesion and high gloss has been produced since 2006. This coating provides very good ink adhesion, especially with UV-based, water-based and solvent- based inks and increases the printing quality.

It also would be nefit the end user and converter by prolonging the shelf life of unprinted film. Another new product, developed in 2007 is BOPP based silicone liner film. This film is produced by coating silicone on to high dimensionally stable transparent BOPP films having a thicknesses of 40 and 50 my. and provides high performance labeling on high speed labeling machines. The PP based release liner waste which remains after labeling can be converted to granule form and be used in second grade injection or sheet extrusions. Thus, it provides cost savings and overcomes waste disposal problem.

Polinas also provides transparent, pearlized and metallized films for single ply and lamination applications for roll fed labeling for gravure and flexo converters, while our cavitated BOPP and Cast IML (inmold labeling) films have been used by our customers for     a long time.

We anticipate that the IML market will continue to grow over the next few years. A new product, developed in 2007, is a PP based oxobiodegredable film which decomposes completely naturally to CO2, water and biomass in two years. Biodegredable versions of Poligreen series label films have been supplied to customers for environmentfriendly labeling.

By focusing on customer-oriented solutions, Polinas has followed-up recent developments in the label market with both technological developments and increased expectations. In additiion, we also work as a solution provider and business partner with customers to develop tailor-made products for different demands and necessities.
